Principals letter to new and returning parents

April 26, 2007

Dear New and Returning AISC Families,

The new school year of 2007-08 will begin Monday, August 6, 2007!  We look forward to seeing our returning and new students and families, and hope that the summer holiday you will have or that you have had has been restful and fulfilling.

To help with the transition to the new school year we'd like to provide the following practical information.  This is not intended to take the place of the level Handbooks we provide, but to give details that most parents and students ask about, whether new or returning.  Please call the school office at 91-44-225-9000 ext. 2212 (middle and high school) or ext. 2211 (elementary) for assistance if needed.

SCHOOL HOURS 2006-07

Preschool: 8:30 a.m. to 12:15 p.m. (Day Care hours are 12:30 to 3:15 p.m.)
Kindergarten:  8:30 a.m. to 3:15 p.m.
Grades 1-5:   8:30 a.m. to 3:15 p.m.
Grades 6-8: 8:30 a.m. to 3:40 p.m.
Grades 9-12: 8:30 a.m. to 3:40 p.m.

After 3:45 p.m., students not involved in a sanctioned after-school activity, are required to wait in the drop off/pick-up area at the front of the school.  Elementary children who are waiting until older students are dismissed at 3:40 p.m. MUST stay in the cafeteria until they are picket the parent or student.  Please be prompt in delivering and picking up your children.

ITEMS TO BRING TO SCHOOL AND/OR BUY WHILE ON HOME LEAVE:

Students should come prepared with pencils/pens, writing tablets/notebooks, and some type of book bag/backpack.  The PE program requires students to wear gym/sports shoes that have non-marking soles; a loose fitting set of shorts and tops suitable for P.E., and a swimsuit.  It is highly recommended that students have sun cream, a sun hat, swimming goggles, and UV protected sun glasses.  If students are planning to turn out for sports they may want a pair of shoes that have safety spikes or cleats, and/or a pair of basketball shoes.

Elementary children are required to bring a water bottle to school for use during the year (this is refilled as needed).  You may wish to buy one that is durable, and be sure to mark it with your child's name.

Parents of elementary children may also wish to buy while on leave or bring from one's home country your national dress and a costume that is suitable for the school's annual Halloween parade.  It is always helpful to bring costumes, dress or "artifacts" that might be useful for the United Nations day celebrations, recognition of your own nation's culture and identity, and the India Week program.

Students are discouraged from bringing large amounts of cash or expensive personal effects such as mobile phones and walkman type devices which do not relate to their learning needs.

All Middle school students will be participating in MS Band as part of their music class. All MS students and those HS students planning to participate in the HS Band: Special clothing for Concert Dress includes a pair of black dress pants or skirt (not short) and black dress shoes. You will need to purchase a Black Band T-shirt from the school to finish off your uniform.

Students planning on joining a sporting team will be representing the school while traveling and participating in tournaments; hence, there is a dress code that is required.  Bring a skirt and blouse for the girls with enclosed shoes, and for the boys dress trousers, shirt and ties with appropriate shoes.

SNACK/RECESS TIME:

All levels have a morning recess and it is suggested that a light, healthy snack be sent with your elementary child for this break.  The elementary recess is at 9:45 a.m. (grades 3-5) and 10:00 a.m. (grades K-2) and the middle/high school's is at 10:14 a.m.

LUNCH PROGRAM

The timings for our daily lunches are…

Elementary grades K-2: 11:20 a.m. to 11:40 a.m. (followed by a 20 minute recess)
Elementary grades 3-5: 11:40 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. (followed by a 20 minute recess)
Middle and High School: 12:20 to 1:04 p.m. (includes recess)

AISC has a modest lunch program that provides a daily set menu each day of the week, on a 5 day cycle.  The menu is catered by a variety of food providers from outside the school who have been selected by an established parent and staff committee.

However, the lunch program will not begin operating until Monday, August 13.  Please remember that students must come to school with a lunch during the first five (5) days of school.  During the week of Aug. 16 our students will receive a form to bring home and to use in ordering the meals desired.  The form and payment in rupees must be returned to school by Friday, August 10 to participate for the following week.  This process will be used throughout the year but more details about it and costs will be provided during the first week of school and more details about the process will be given later.

The cafeteria has several refrigerators which may be used by students to keep their lunches cool.  It also has some microwave ovens for use in warming food; these are operated only by an adult on behalf of students and students are asked not to attempt to use them on their own.

While the school has a PTA store and snack bar (near the cafeteria), elementary students (Preschool through grade 5) are not permitted to buy food from them for morning recess or lunch.  They may make purchases, however, after school.

New Student Tours and Orientation Day is FRIDAY, August 3

AISC begins its welcoming program for new students with special presentations for new students and their parents on Friday, August 3.  The schedule for them is as follows…

Elementary School Orientation (all grades): 10:00 a.m. to 10:45 a.m.
            Middle School Orientation: 11:30 a.m. to 12:15 p.m.
            High School Orientation: 2:00 p.m. to 2:45 p.m.

The orientations are held in the school library and include a tour of the school.

LOCKERS FOR MIDDLE AND HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS

Lockers will be provided for all middle and high school students, along with a combination lock for security of belongings.  Students are asked to use the lockers for the bags and other belongings, but they should not store valuable items in them.  Also, make sure you keep your lock combination to yourself—do not share it with other students.

Student handbookS and Activities Calendar

AISC will provide all students with an Elementary, Middle and/or High School Handbook (as appropriate) and the Activities Calendar for 2007-08 during the first week of school.  The handbooks contain important information for our students and parents and we strongly encourage you to review it together.  We update them annually and welcome suggestions and ideas for making improvements to them.   The activities calendar is also very important and we recommend that it be kept in a prominent place for easy reference, since it contains all of the major dates for activities, events, tournaments and special days at our school.

Parents new to AISC will also be provided with a New Parent Handbook, which is the product of the PTA and school, as a part of the welcoming program conducted by the PTA.

ID Badges

Please remember that to enter the campus one must have an AISC picture ID, or must go through the security sign-in procedure at the main entrance gate.  Wearing of photo ID cards on campus is mandatory so please cooperate with security.

Families new to AISC are requested to provide us with a passport-size photo for each identification badge. Please contact Ruth (Principal’s Office) for new identity cards for new members as well as replacement for lost or mutilated cards.  Also please inform security if your card has been misplaced or lost.

Vehicle Decals

Vehicle decals will be issued through security.  All parents are requested to give their car numbers to Security/ Reception as soon as possible to enable the printing of new decals.  The old decals will not be valid for the coming year.  Only cars with decals will be allowed to park on campus.  Those decals can either be fixed to the inside of the windshield on the lower passenger side, or you can simply put the decal on the left-hand dashboard for viewing by our gate guards.

HIGH SCHOOL STUDENT BEGINNING ENGLISH PROGRAM

Please note that high school (grades 9-12) students whose level of English proficiency is "beginning level", will be admitted to the school's Intensive English Program for up to five periods of daily studies in English and, if appropriate and available, a limited number of regular classes.  They will not be considered for additional regular classes until they reach the intermediate level of English proficiency, as determined by the school administration.  The school's admissions procedures contain additional rules and guidelines regarding high school students who speak no English so please be sure to review this when applying for admission.

Thank you for reviewing this information and we look forward to seeing you in August.

                                                            Very Sincerely,

                                                            AISC Administration
