HIGH
SCHOOL CURRICULUM
The
AISC high school program for grades 9-12 is designed along the lines
of a standard American high school program of studies, and students
are awarded with an American High School Diploma upon graduation.
During the four year high school program, students must take certain
required courses in combination with a number of elected courses.
This allows them a degree of freedom to follow their chosen academic
path and prepares them for further study after graduation.
In addition to the standard American High School courses, AISC offers two highly regarded college preparatory programs for students; the Advanced Placement (AP) and the International Baccalaureate Diploma Program (IBDP). Both of these more sophisticated and rigorous programs prepare our students for the increasingly challenging world of college entry and career placement. The choice that these courses of study give to our students underscores our collective commitment to provide world class education to each and every student in our charge.
While high school is the appropriate time for students
to look to the future and start thinking about their plans after
graduation, they are encouraged to be fully involved in all aspects
of school life. This ranges from representing AISC as a member of
the Raptors sports teams and participation in extra curricular activities
to leadership of the Student Council and support of the Learning
Service Program, which allows students to gain credits for assisting
the school in the library and other areas.
All students are required to complete a Community
Service Program prior to graduation by performing 10 hours of community
service for every year spent at AISC as a high school student. Students
may explore their own avenues or join an activity organized by AISC.
Community Service traditionally centers on visits to orphanages
and homes for the needy, and has included rejuvenating the walls
of a local home for women and joining the Chennai-chapter of the
Turtle Conservation Network in their efforts to track nesting turtles.
It is at the high school level that the school
guidance counselor plays her most important role. Throughout their
last four years, students receive regular newsletters from the counselor's
office, advising them of the choices that lie ahead and how they
should start preparing for them. A library of directories and brochures
provide information on universities and colleges around the world,
and students are guided in how to apply and qualify for entry into
further education. The result is an alumni body that attends universities
the world over.
The official graduation ceremony and associated
celebrations take place in May and June of every year. The traditional
graduate-faculty lunch immediately following the commencement ceremony
reflects the camaradie and respect that students gain for their
teachers and peers throughout their time at AISC.
GRADUATION REQUIREMENTS
In order to be eligible for graduation from the
American International School - Chennai, students must earn a minimum
of 24 credits or the equivalent and specific required courses must
be completed. Semester credit for a course will not be awarded for
a failing grade. Year-end credit for a course will be based on the
average of the two semester grades. Full-time attendance for a period
of one academic year will be required of students who enter in their
senior year. The instructional program is designed to enable every
student to earn the necessary units of credit and take the appropriate
subject area courses within a reasonable period of time.
The courses in the areas specified below must be
successfully completed to meet graduation requirements. Requirements
are carefully balanced to ensure that students receive instruction
in strictly academic subjects like English, Math and Sciences as
well as developing their creative and athletic skills.
